The Occupational 健康 and 安全 for the Animal Care Program (Occ健康机场核心计划) is a concerted effort of the Environmental 健康 and 安全 Department, 的IACUC, the Attending Veterinarian, a contracted medical doctor, principal investigators and their student assistants; the Animal Care Facility workers; and the animal users themselves. These groups cooperate to formulate personnel safety and health management as appropriate for each person's identified risk factors. All personnel that are involved in the direct care of animals and their living quarters and those individuals who have direct contact with animals (live or dead), their viable tissues, body fluids or wastes are included in this program. Note that this description is limited to TSU 教师, 工作人员 and students with animal or animal material contact.

风险评估 & 病史

The assessment of risk is determined by frequency of contact, intensity of exposure, hazards associated with the animals being handled, hazardous properties of agents used in with the animals being handled, hazardous properties of agents used in research, the susceptibility of individual employees, the hazard-control measures available, and the occupational history of individual employees.

In addition to the completing the 风险评估, 每一个教师, student or 工作人员 member having direct research animal contact or requiring access to vivaria must complete the 病史 Questionnaire to determine if their work assignment and/ or medical status pose exposure risks that may require additional health recommendations or safety measures. Principal investigators are responsible for ensuring that their 教师, 工作人员, and students working in their research space complete the 风险评估 and medical history questionnaire.


Obtaining 健康care Services

TSU has a health care program for its employees, who may obtain various immunizations, medical evaluations and preventive medicines through 健康 Select United 健康 Medical plan. 学生 may obtain these services through the Student 健康 Center Clinic on campus. 因此, tetanus vaccination and treatment for bites, scratches and illness or injury will be provided by the University's Student 健康 Center for students. Faculty and 工作人员 must receive vaccinations and treatments via their primary care physicians from health plans provided by the University. Institutional policies are in place for personal hygiene, handling hazardous agents and personnel protection.


Responsibilities of the Occupational 健康 and 安全 Physician

A contract physician in the Student 健康 Clinic on the campus of TSU is responsible for reviewing the 风险评估 and 病史 questionnaire forms. All HIPPA guidelines and regulations regarding patient privacy are adhered to in storing Occupational 健康 and 安全 program participant files in the Student 健康 Clinic. 的IACUC, TSU's Risk Management Specialist, the Director of the Department of Environmental and 健康 and 安全 and the contract physician are responsible for the planning and monitoring for the Occupational 健康 and 安全 - Animal Care and Use Program activities, goals and objectives.


Occupational 健康 & 安全培训

Via the Occupational 健康 and 安全 Program, 教师, 工作人员 and students will receive educational and on-the-job training regarding the inherent hazards associated with handling laboratory animals and working in an animal facility. The training will provide information regarding allergies to laboratory animals, 化学品安全, physical hazards, handling of waste materials, potential zoonotic diseases, and precautions taken during pregnancy, and illness or decreased immunocompentence. The training will be sponsored by DRERS and conducted by the Department of Environmental 安全, 的IACUC, 和DRERS.


Reporting Injuries & 疾病

Injuries are reported by 教师, 工作人员 and students to the Environmental 健康 and 安全 Department by completing and submitting an Accident and Incident report form to the Department. The form will then be reviewed by the TSU IACUC and the 健康 and 安全 Committee (HSC) for potential correction of unsafe practices or conditions.
