With the recent focus on racial injustices in the United States and the additional stressors and traumas African Americans and other racial minorities may experience in this country, the topic of mental health has been brought to the forefront. 研究 has consistently indicated that minority communities are generally underserved. Members of minority groups are less likely to receive mental health treatment, 当他们这么做的时候, they may not receive the best quality of care. 正因为如此, the United States 健康 资源 and Services 政府 (HRSA) has emphasized the importance of increasing the number of mental health providers, especially those from disadvantaged communities. 他们希望这些供应商, 通过他们共同的经历, will be better able to meet the needs of these communities.

德克萨斯南方大学 is proud to announce that their Psychology Department has been awarded a 2.9-million-dollar HRSA grant that will provide full scholarships to students pursuing a Master of Arts in Clinical Community Psychology. 5年以上, scholarships will be provided to 118 aspiring mental health clinicians from disadvantaged backgrounds. This scholarship will cover tuition, fees, books, and licensure preparation expenses. Qualified students must apply for admission to the graduate school at TSU and then complete an application for the scholarship. The scholarship will be competitive; only 20 incoming full-time graduate students will be awarded the scholarship each fall. Selected students will continue to receive funding each subsequent year while in the master’s program until the grant ends. 作为这项努力的一部分, the Psychology Department at TSU will also dedicate resources to help recipients find training opportunities and job positions in community and primary care clinics in underserved areas. It is expected that scholarship recipients will have the passion and commitment to continue working in these communities after graduation.

TSU和HRSA有着共同的愿景. 许多孩子, 成年人, and families are in immediate need of quality mental health services, 但往往资源有限, lack of providers willing to accept Medicaid or provide low-cost services, and other barriers to treatment prevent these individuals from receiving the care they need. This grant being awarded to TSU is a large step in the right direction to address these problems.

周三, 9月23日, 2020, Junior Music Education major and soprano section leader for the TSU University Choir J’Neise Hodge represented 德克萨斯南方大学 by performing in the 105 Voices of History HBCU National Choir virtual performance of Dr. Roland Carter’s arrangement of Lift Every Voice and Sing. Choir singers from across our nation’s historically Black colleges and universities submitted audition videos during the summer and Hodge was among the selected singers to be featured in the video that premiered as a part of the White House Initiative HBCU Week 2020.
